Rasha Abdel Aal, the head of the Egyptian Tax Authority, announced that, as part of the effort to modernize and strengthen Egypt’s tax system, as well as to expand digital transformation and combat tax evasion, the government is launching an electronic application that allows instant verification of VAT registration certificates and cigarette products. This is only a part of the government's plans, which will continue working on this matter.
Practical Implications of the New System
As presented by the Tax Authority, taxable persons and consumers will be able to quickly confirm the authenticity and registration details of products and VAT data in real time through an electronic link. Verification is carried out by scanning QR codes on secure tax stamps using a mobile phone, regardless of the operating system. The measure is designed to improve transparency and make it significantly harder for counterfeit goods or tax fraud schemes to operate.
Abdel Aal further noted that developing the tax bandrol system is a key component of the Egyptian Tax Authority’s broader digital transformation strategy, aimed at strengthening inspection and enforcement capabilities, improving tax fairness, and protecting the integrity of markets.
In parallel, the Tax Authority is expanding digital services to simplify procedures for businesses and foster greater trust between taxable persons and the tax administration. Taken all together, these measures perfectly align with Egypt’s wider shift toward a fully digital economy.
Conclusion
Egypt's launch of an electronic VAT and product verification system represents a meaningful step in the government's commitment to digitalising and modernising tax governance. By leveraging QR code scanning technology rather than relying on cumbersome paper-based processes, the solution makes compliance more accessible and fraud more difficult.
Ultimately, the initiative reflects a clear strategic direction: using technology to build trust between businesses and the state, strengthen enforcement, and establish Egypt's tax system as a solid foundation for a fully digital economy.
